From the President
Welcome again to the SES Volunteers Association Newsletter. Here we are in October, traditionally time to ramp up our operational activities to lead our communities at the local level.
Many communities suffer from learned reliance, but what does that mean and how do we reverse the enormous cost bourn by the governments that have adopted these principles?
65th Anniversary
Final preparations are underway for the 65 Year Anniversary of the SES in WA. Members have put many hours of work into planning the event for SES volunteers. We have multiple units attending from the Metropolitan, South West and Midwest regions.
This is a great opportunity for units to display their history and what their units can do. We’ll have displays from SWORD Logistics and Communications Support Unit.
The Salvation Army emergency services will be on site providing welfare
for current volunteers and a coffee van.
SESVA- AGM
From meticulous planning to seamless execution, our team worked tirelessly to ensure both in-person and online participation from all corners of the State. A huge thank you to everyone involved for your participation and commitment. Everyone’s contributions made this event a resounding success!

NDRC – 2024
The National Disaster Rescue Challenge has come and gone for another two years. The WA Team travelled to Penrith via Sydney in preparation for two days of Challenge participation.
State Emergency Service (SES) teams from across Australia converged on Sydney to test their skills and learn new techniques from each other in this National event hosted this year by NSW SES.
Why I became a Peer Support
lived with this experience until I had to attend three funerals in the space of a fortnight in 2001 and had a mental breakdown. I contacted a mental health service provider and after some trouble, I convinced the operator that I had to see a psychologist in person as soon as possible. I then saw a psychologist and after just 2 sessions I considered myself cured. How wrong could I be.
I joined Murray SES in May 1983. In 1985 I was involved in the rescue of an 18-month old girl who had fallen down a bore hole on a property at Coolup. Her family had just purchased the rural property.
Midwest-Gascoyne Regional Exercise
Friday the 13th in the afternoon, Lynton Station was descended upon by the Midwest-Gascoyne region SES units—Kalbarri, Geraldton/Greenough, Meekatharra, Moora and ICV crew from Geraldton. The regional career staff attended as well.
As always, the friendly flies decided to accompany us just to make sure we keep the ‘Aussie wave’ happening at regular intervals.
