14/04/2023 – Cockburn Youth in Emergency Services Cadet Program

The City of Cockburn and DFES have recently approved a DFES-aligned Youth in Emergency Services (YES) Cadet Program to commence within the City of Cockburn.

The concept of the YES program is to immerse school students in the world of emergency services to help build knowledge, resilience and awareness whilst providing structure and pathways to volunteering and working in the services in the future.

The YES program Cadets typically learn from all the emergency services. Skills and activities include but are not limited to :

Rescue Techniques
Radio Communications
Firefighting
Knots and Ropes
Bush Craft
Skipper Tickets
Senior First Aid

YES program team are seeking expressions of interest from the SES to be involved with the program.

You would only be required to volunteer a member(s) of your Unit once or twice a term (or during the off-season) to teach the cadets a particular skill or lesson within their area of expertise, with lesson plans available. Volunteers would not require a working with children check or trainer’s certificate.

They are looking to start small with a group of 10-15 cadets aged 13-17 who would meet one night a week during the school term, hoping to start in mid-late 2023.

While the program falls under DFES, it will be coordinated and managed entirely by volunteers, and financed by fundraising and grants.

The Cockburn YES Team would greatly appreciate support in being involved in this program and assisting in the development of the next generation of volunteer emergency services members.
