Firey’s to walk 500 kilometres for people in need
Western Australian Fire and Rescue Service firefighters are doing their bit to help people in need by undertaking a 500 kilometre walk from Geraldton to Perth. The ‘Firey’s 500’ charity walk will commence from Geraldton Volunteer Fire and Rescue Service station at 6am on 6 September 2014. Organiser and Volunteer Fire and Rescue Service firefighter Ron Winstone will take part in the event along with other career and volunteer emergency services personnel. “The Firey’s 500 charity walk is a massive undertaking for a worthwhile cause,” Mr Winstone said. “We are expecting more than 15 walkers and support crew to take part in the event, which is expected to raise thousands of dollars for charity.” Money raised from the walk will go to the Burns Unit at Princess Margaret Hospital for Children and the WA Emergency Services Volunteers Assistance Scheme (Hardship Fund).
Firefighters will walk through Geraldton, Dongara, Moora, Gingin and Perth. Motorists who come across the firefighters walking on the road are asked to exercise care and attention when approaching the group. The walkers are expected to arrive at the Department of Fire and Emergency Services (DFES) Education and Heritage Centre in Perth on 16 September 2014.
