Two specialised personnel from the SES will be deployed to Queensland to assist with the anticipated effects of Cyclone Yasi. Emergency Services Minister Rob Johnson said Emergency Management Queensland had formally requested the deployment of two SES staff – Steve Summerton (District Manager Training Emergency Services) and Glenn Hall (District Manager State Emergency Services South).
Mr Johnson said the two SES personnel would assist in the aftermath of the devastating cyclone, the impact of which was predicted to be more life threatening than any experienced during recent generations. Tropical Cyclone Yasi is a large and very powerful tropical cyclone and poses a serious threat to life and property within the warning area, especially between Cairns and Townsville,” he said.
Residents in the warning area are facing a frightening likelihood of extremely damaging waves, strong currents, flooding rains and destructive winds. WA will be there to help our Queensland counterparts in the aftermath of this significant emergency. Once the cyclone has passed, the two SES personnel will be deployed to the far northern region of Queensland to assist with disaster response.
