From the President
The pleasure of volunteering within the State Emergency Service is knowing that you were recruited by a community based group of likeminded people. These simple actions make a major contribution to building local capability and the capacity to meet NEEDS.
The training is diverse, so in short there is something for many people to learn and get your teeth into. The notion that this service is a one trick emergency response group is far from the truth. A big yes is that we do respond to emergencies in many and various ways.
Regional Exercises
Just a quick update on the planned regional exercise this year. It is the intention to hold three Regional Exercises, one in the South of the State, one in the North of the State and one in the Metropolitan area, involving SES Volunteers in those areas.
It is planned for the Exercises to be over several days and involve SES Volunteers practising, using and showcasing their many skills
Development New SES Resources
The Community Preparedness Team are extending an invitation to all SES units through the SES CE Network and beyond, for feedback on a proposed
new community engagement resource for SES Units to use during your engagement activities. The resource was developed in 2017.
Meeting with Minister Dawson
The SES Association President was delighted to meet with Minister Dawson for the first time on Thursday 10 February. Since the Ministers
appointment, it has indeed been a baptism of severe weather and fire. What an induction process, welcome aboard!
Our discussion was extremely positive for a first meeting. The approach for both government and the Association is about positive actions,
recognition of SES Volunteers, future SES structure under a new emergency services legislation and building community resilience in emergency management, not just a response focus.
Historical Sub-Committee
Expressions of interest
The SESVA has formed an Historical Sub-Committee and are calling for expressions of interest from people interested in being on the sub-committee.
Why should we be concerned with our history?
The importance of the past shouldn’t be under estimated. Recording history lets future generations know what our fathers, grandfathers
and we did to serve our community
Volunteer Leadership Program
Applications are now open The Volunteer Leadership Program (VLP) equips volunteers from community organisations, not-for-profit, disaster relief organisations and local government within the emergency management sector, with the skills and confidence to grow as leaders. The VLP experience is immersive and collaborative, bringing together volunteers from different organisations and agencies to build knowledge and share experiences with each other.
Height Safety PAT
We have been advised by DFES the Working at Heights PAT next meeting will be on Saturday 12th March 2022.
The object of the meeting is to resolve the issue of 3 points of contact in ascending and descending ladders.
Recruitment Tip
We asked Bill Mulroney how the Pingelly Unit carried out recruitment of members. He advised us they were doing very well at the moment in the recruitment space with 3 adults and 3 cadets joining just recently. The Unit has a strong presence in the local community, and this is very important. When the Unit is recruiting they place flyers around town with a tear off phone number on them.
