02/11/2015 – SES Volunteers find Missing Backpackers

Lake King / Norseman Land Search and Rescue Operation

Ravensthorpe Police and State Emergency Service volunteers rescued three French backpackers (two male and one female) last night after they became stranded in the Lake King / Norseman area.  It is believed the vehicle they were travelling in broke down or crashed about 4:30pm on Saturday 31 October 2015 along the Lake King – Norseman Road, about 80km from Lake King. The road is a four wheel drive track and experiences very limited traffic.

The backpackers left a note on their vehicle and commenced walking towards Norseman. They had limited water and food supplies with them.  About 3:30pm yesterday, Sunday 1 November 2015, the group were located by a passing motorist about 40km further away from where they had left their vehicle (now 120km from Lake King). That person was not able to convey them anywhere, however provided them with some water and contacted WA Police about 1.5 hours later when the vehicle reached an area where there is mobile phone coverage.

Ravensthorpe Police, supported by State Emergency Service volunteers, conducted a search for the three backpackers and about 10:00pm last night they located them approximately 120km north east of Lake King, on the Lake King – Norseman Road, in Norseman.  Apart from being dehydrated all three appeared to be in good health. The backpackers were conveyed to Ravensthorpe.
