03/01/2013 – Have your say about Cyclones and Floods

Have your say about cyclones and floods in a new online survey

For the first time North West residents will have the opportunity to take part in an online survey that examines how communities prepare and deal with the effects of cyclones and floods.   The Department of Fire and Emergency Services (DFES) survey asks people to detail their concerns, stories and suggestions about the wet season.

The information will be used to help improve the Department’s work in raising community awareness and education on how people can best prepare and respond to cyclones and floods.   DFES Community Engagement Director Suellen Shea said the survey would explore the community’s cyclone resilience and give more people the opportunity to share their experiences and knowledge.

“Whether you are new to the North West or you’ve previously experienced cyclones and floods we would like to hear from you,” Ms Shea said.    “Every suggestion and comment will be reviewed and will help us form the basis of our planning for the future.   “Ultimately, we want the community to be prepared for a cyclone or flood so this survey is about helping us to help the community prepare for and cope in an emergency.”

The survey has been designed to take 15 to 20 minutes and includes questions on how people would like to be informed of impending cyclone and flood events. The survey can be accessed from now until 31 January 2013.   The North West of Western Australia between Broome and Exmouth is the most cyclone prone part of Australia’s coastline, with the wet season running from November to April.
