Five shipwrecked fishermen were rescued overnight after an emergency beacon was activated off Dongara, 362km north of Perth. Police said the EPIRB emergency signal was activated about 10.30 last night, when the men’s boat began to sink. Water Police, in conjunction with the RAC and Police rescue helicopters, Dongara and Leeman marine rescue volunteers and the Rescue Co-ordination Centre in Canberra, conducted a search and discovered the men in the water about 40km southwest of Dongara early today. The five men – aged from their 40s to late 50s – were rescued and treated for hypothermia.
