07/06/2012 – Newman SES Volunteers assist Police

Samuel Dinnison Media Liaison Officer Police Media Unit advises that Detectives have charged a man after the death of a 14 year old girl in Newman yesterday  morning, Wednesday 6 June 2012.  Just before 7:30am police received information from St John Ambulance that a person had  been found in the bush adjacent to McLennan Drive in Newman. Officers attended the scene and it was confirmed a 14 year old girl was deceased.

Officers arrested a 20 year old man located nearby, who is known to the victim.  The investigation has been undertaken by detectives from South Hedland, Karratha and the Major Crime Squad, with the assistance from local police and forensic specialists from Perth and the Pilbara.

Police would also like to acknowledge the local State Emergency Service volunteers and the local shire for their invaluable assistance in preserving the scene in unfavourable weather conditions.  A 20 year old man has been charged with Grievous Bodily Harm, and will appear in the Karratha Magistrates Court today, Thursday 7 June 2012 via video link from Newman. This charge may be reviewed pending the results of a post-mortem examination.
