12/12/2011 – SES Volunteers assist at Hospital crash

This morning a vehicle has crashed into Rockingham General Hospital causing a water main to burst and the emergency department to be evacuated.  Police say the car has crashed into the “emergency department area.” It’s understood the incident happened just after 6am.

Police are questioning an 18-year-old man over the incident, but no charges have been laid. Former Kwinana Town councillor Merv Kearney was inside the hospital’s medical unit this morning when the car came crashing through the emergency department. “It just sounded like someone had made a bang on the wall,” he said.  “One of the staff came in and said “you have to stay in bed, there is water everywhere.”

Following the incident Ambulances were diverted to other hospitals.  Existing emergency department patients are being moved to other wards or alternative hospitals.  Those requiring urgent medical treatment should make alternative arrangements to Fremantle Hospital or Peel Health Campus.

A water main has burst as a result of the crash and that the emergency department has been evacuated.  Volunteer’s from The Rockingham/Kwinana SES Unit attended the scene shortly after the incident occurred and provided support to repair damage and assist in the cleanup.
