10/12/2010 – Flooding at Gwalia, Western Australia (updated)

Correction:
It has been determined that the date of “1927” on the flooding in Gwaila has been incorrectely identified/labelled  by the Gwalia Historical Museum.  The photo has had to be taken 1939. Dick was only 9 years old in 1927, one of the three men in photo.

This is to report flooding at Gwalia, a small mining community near Leonora.  The photo shows  three miners enjoying  the welcome relief from the heat in the water near the Gwalia railway station.  After all there was no air-conditioning or 3 flavours of ice-cream in the company mess in 1927.

The photo is from the collection of Dick Ridgwell ( son of Jim Ridgewell from the Gosnells SES ), seen here on right hand side of photo. Dick recalls the flooding was extensive, from Lake Eyre to Esperance.

It can happen.
