22/10/2010 – Cockburn SES Visits Harmony School

An invitation from a teacher at the Harmony School Pre Primary saw 6 members of our Unit visit the kindy and pre primary students on 9th August.  This was part of the children’s learning programme about “People in Our Community”.    With the weather being perfect it allowed us to have our 3 vehicles and selected equipment on display next to the oval.  The morning was structured with each class spending approx. 30 minutes with us, firstly us giving a simple illustrated short talk about what we do in storms and searches, followed by the children being divided into 4 groups of 6 for a rotation of some hands on activities.

They really enjoyed the chance to put on safety vests and helmets and sit in the truck; trying the 1,2,3 lift method for basket stretchers; trying on safety harnesses and pulling on the mechanical advantage rig that had been set up.  There was no rest for us at the morning recess break as we had a crowd of primary students show a great deal of interest as well.   By 12.30p.m. we had seen 150 kindy and pre primary students pass through our display with each child being given a specially prepared “showbag” of promotional literature, stickers, balloons, pens etc. to take home to their families.

The response from the staff and students for our efforts was fantastic, with the children making and sending to our Unit their “thank you” cards.
